Bad Wurzach/Allgäu
Cure
Bad Wurzach, the only mud-spa in the Allgäu region is situated in a delightful sub-Alpine landscape close to Lake Constance and the Allgäu Alps. Principal means of treatment are mud-baths and mud-packs. These mud therapies are complemented by medicinal baths, electrotherapy, massages, ergotherapy, acupuncture and also the mild and bracing sub-Alpine climate (the altitude is from 650 to 800 metres – 2,100 to 2,600 feet). Alongside these classic treatments physiotherapy is of particular importance in all cases. For over 70 years the cure in Bad Wurzach has proved to be outstanding in cases of rheumatism, slipped discs and spinal injuries, arthritis and gynaecological disorders.
Today Bad Wurzach is a modern spa with its eye on the future, offering its 15,000 guests each year the complete tourist infrastructure of a health resort rich in tradition. In the main town of Bad Wurzach and its nine villages some 1000 beds are available to patients and holiday guests, in the rheumatism clinic, the three sanatoria, the hotels, inns and private houses. In addition there are ample opportunities to take a farm holiday.
Culture
For centuries a small town, Bad Wurzach, now has some 14,500 inhabitants. But even today it retains its rural and intimate character. Wurzach Castle, built between 1723 and 1728, remains the prominent landmark known for its baroque staircase, one of the most beautiful in southern Germany, where every year famous concerts take place. Interesting from an art-historical point of view are the medieval leper house with the Sepp-Mahler-Museum, and the classical Parish Church of St. Verena. On the second Friday of July every year the Festival of the Holy Blood takes place, the second largest mounted procession in Europe, with around 1,700 riders and 5,000 visitors and pilgrims.
Nature
Bad Wurzach lies right on the edge of the Wurzach Marshes nature conservation area. Measuring 14 square kilometres (5,5 square miles) it is the largest continuous and still intact highland marsh in central Europe. In the course of the last 10,000 years it has been formed by the evaporation of an iceage glacial lake. The nature proctection centre of Bad Wurzach, which cares for the Wurzach Marshes, was establishes in1985.
Activities
There is always something of interest in Bad Wurzach; guided tours of the town and the marshes, artistic trips along the “Baroque Road” of upper Swabia, conducted walks and cycle tours, carriage rides, theatre performances, concerts, art exhibitions, slide shows, as well as dance evenings, make for a richly varied stay in Bad Wurzach. Visitors may indulge in sporting activities at the indoor or outdoor baths or on one of the numerous lakes in the surrounding region, riding or playing tennis or by taking conducted cycle tours. The town is also a splendid base for excursions to the nearby Lake Constance, to the Bavarian Alps (and the Castles of the Bavarian Kings), to Austria, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein.
